Aoba is a Japanese Language school strongly focusing on learning Japanese the fun way.

Here in Aoba, we use the direct method (chokusetsu hou) to educate our students. This is the most common method used by the Japanese to educate their society. It ensures that you have maximum exposure to the language, cultivating all factors of listening, speaking, reading and writing.

For the 3 hour standard courses, it will start with a review of the previous lesson and a mini test. Thereafter, the main lesson will be taught and students may be divided into groups for conversation practices. The lesson will then conclude with a listening exercise.

For other types of courses, content will vary according to the specific requirements of the student.

Most 3 hour classes will also have a 10 minute break midway. Students may proceed to our refreshments area for a drink and some snacks.

Yes. All our lecturers are native Japanese with at least a degree qualification approved by the Ministry of Education.

When learning a language, we aim to immerse our students into the essence and foundation of it. Lessons will mainly be conducted in Japanese. English will only be used if necessary (e.g. Basic courses). But rest assured, all our teachers understand English.

We have compulsory tests at the end of each level. Students are required to sit for the test and pass in order to progress to the next level. If a student fails the test, he/she will have to sit for a re-test.

For international accreditations, students may sit for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT). This test is held every July and December in Singapore. There are 5 levels to the test, starting from N5( basic) to N1 (advanced).

Aoba's courses are structured to correspond to the respective levels in the JLPT test.

Basic: JLPT N5

Intermediate: JLPT N4

Upper Intermediate: JLPT N3

Pre-advanced: JLPT N2

Advanced: JLPT N1

To maximize the interactivity between students and teachers, each class will have approximately 6-12 students. This facilitates group discussion and the teacher will be able to monitor each individual's progress clearly.

Students are able to apply for an in-house certificate when they finish an entire level of a course (e.g. Basic 1,2,3).

Aoba has a little library which houses books, magazines and DVDs. Students may borrow them for a week to increase exposure to the Japanese language. Just pick the item you like and proceed to our reception to sign it out.

Aoba has frequent joint cultural exchange events with Japanese exchange students. These students are usually in Singapore for a short period of time to study English or Chinese. It would be a great opportunity for students to participate in the event and make new friends. We hold such events about once every 3 months.

There are also in-house events where the event is usually held at Aoba. Past in-house events include food making sessions, origami making sessions, etc.
